IELTS SPEAKING PART 2: Describe a law or regulation about environmental protection

Describe a law or regulation about environmental protection.

You should say:

  • What it is
  • How you first learned about it
  • Who benefits from it
  • And explain how you feel about this law or regulation

I’m going to talk about a law in Vietnam requiring owners of factories to use the best available methods to control environmental pollution. It’s been extremely effective in deterring factories from discharging oils, untreated sewage, and waste directly into the ground or a community water source, such as a river or lake because they know that they’ll get fined heavily if they get caught.

Regarding how I first learned about this law, well, I suppose it must have been through watching the news on social networking sites because when the law was revised, it was pretty big news.

In Vietnam, the landmark Vedan Case is frequently cited to illustrate the disastrous environmental effects of large-scale industrial operations in Viet Nam. In this case, the food additive producer was found to have been discharging untreated wastewater and sewerage into a river. Vedan was responsible for about 90% of the total pollution in the river. Due to the serious impact of this case, the government decided to crack down on companies who dispose of hazardous waste into the marine environment. So those who are culpable can be prosecuted and sanctioned

I have to admit that this law is a good one because it has helped preserve the environment.  The environmental awareness of the owners of factories has been raised since this law came into effect. As a result, they have adopted environmentally friendly techniques to cut down on waste disposal.
